एक कप चाय
Indian Bureaucracy
In the month of Jan 2026 I would be completing my 11 years at the role of block level Education Officer. Out of which for the first 07 years I looked after the Elementary System of Education and since 22 Nov 2023 I am looking after the Secondary System of Education in this one of the remotest block of Uttarakhand...
These 11 years were spent living in rented 01 room set all alone and eating out in normal dabhas of these small hilly towns namely Chakrata and Mori....During these 11 years I have travelled mostly by public transport as the Education Officers are not found eligible for any official vehicle even if you too have cleared the State Civil Services Exam known as the PCS exam in the states of Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. I heard same is not the case with the BEOs of UP as they are having the official vehicles. Traditionally these three are the most sought after perks which lure most of the youth towards Civil services namely Sarkari Gadi, Sarkari Banglow and Orderlies and sorts of body guards who accompany all the SDMs and Tehsildars to open the doors of their official vehicles and to carry their diary and files if at all they travel with these. At times the services of these uniformed PRD or Home Guard or at times State Police Jawans too are used to clear the roads and traffic jams and to scare away the general public so that the Brown Sahibs do not have to face the general public all alone by themselves. They sorts of create a psychological fear among the minds of general public. There are still the Orderlies proudly tunrned out in the Turbaned crisp while uniform of British times to add the more glamour to these services. Now the officers of lot many other departments do not enjoy these perks and prestige and an Education Officer is too one such so called unfortunate fellow in his or her block. I have seen my own batchmates complaining these disparities and raising these issues to our seniors but so far no headway is made for the demand atleast for a vehicle to travel to the remote villages where only a Bolero could be driven.
So what was the way out ? Becoming uninterested towards one's work or removing all these mental blocks and to live a life of a common man and forgetting that you are an officer. I decided to choose this option and my 11 years were smooth and happily spent in these remote villages among the common people living and enjoying each and every moment....
